Schottky diodes and ordinary diodes are unidirectional and can be used in rectifier circuits. The difference between Schottky diodes and ordinary diodes is that the withstand voltage of ordinary diodes can be made higher, but the recovery speed is slow and can only be used for low-frequency rectification. If the frequency is high, reverse leakage will occur because it cannot recover quickly, causing severe heating and burning of the pipe. Schottky diodes usually have a low withstand voltage, but have a fast recovery speed and can be used in high frequency applications.
The characteristics of Schottky diodes are small forward voltage drop and short reverse recovery time. Schottky diodes have low turn-on voltage and small charge storage effect, suitable for high frequency operation. Under the same current, its forward voltage drop is much smaller than that of ordinary diodes. It also has the characteristics of low loss, low noise, high detection sensitivity, stability and reliability. Ordinary diodes will produce a voltage drop of about 0.7-1.7 volts when current flows, but the voltage drop of Schottky diodes is only 0.15-0.45 volts, which improves the efficiency of the system. Schottky diodes use a metal-semiconductor junction as a Schottky barrier to produce a rectification effect, which is different from the pn junction produced by the semiconductor-semiconductor junction in ordinary diodes. The characteristic of the Schottky barrier reduces the on-voltage drop of the Schottky diode and improves the switching speed.
The reverse recovery time of ordinary diodes is about several hundred nanoseconds, while the reverse recovery time of high-speed diodes is less than one hundred nanoseconds. Schottky diodes have no reverse recovery time, so the switching time of small-signal Schottky diodes is about tens of picoseconds, while the switching time of special high-capacity Schottky diodes is only tens of picoseconds. Electromagnetic interference noise is caused by the reverse current within the reverse recovery time of ordinary diodes. Schottky diodes can be switched immediately without the problems of reverse recovery time and reverse phase current.
